What do you know about Mexico?

Ok, so recently this travellers’ paradise may have been hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons thanks to President Trump and his wall-building ambitions. But don’t let that distract you from the facts that Mexico is one of Southern America’s most beautiful countries, packed with a diverse range of landscapes and places of interest to keep you amused for as long as you could wish.

To be clear, in 2017 Mexico was listed as the sixth most visited country in the world for tourism.

And amidst its gorgeous tropical beaches, through its teeming cities and its beautiful forests and hilltops, there are some really stylish hotels that any luxury traveller would love to stay in.

Here we bring you five of the best – a little glimpse into what Mexico has to offer in its best locations. Allow us to show you where you can stay and what you can do when you’re there.

1. Guaycura Boutique Hotel Beach Club and Spa, Baja California

The north-easternmost Mexican state of Baja California is a beach-hoppers paradise with golden sands and turquoise blue waters ideal for sunbathing and diving. Depending on where you settle, this part of Mexico can be unspoilt – seaside towns like La Paz – or filled with Spring-Breakers (Tijuana of Los Cabos).

To get away from the crowds, our recommendation is to stay at the Guaycura Boutique Hotel Beach Club and Spa, located in Todos Santos, a picturesque Pueblos Magicos (magic town), just over one hour’s drive from Los Cabos International Airport.

This stunning hotel was once an art academy, but now offers high-end accommodation to luxury travellers, with four-poster beds in rooms decked out in antique furnishings mixed with high-end technologies including plasma TVs). This boutique hangout also has a rooftop pool and terrace with 360-degree views, and four fine dining restaurants.

To experience the best of Baja you need to hit the beaches. Which is great because Guaycura Boutique Hotel is just 3 miles from a stunning beach with amazing sunset views, and with car hire, there are plenty more to explore without travelling too far.

2. Nima Local House Hotel, Mexico City

Let’s take a look at the capital next: Mexico City. This huge metropolis with its population of nearly 9 million is situated in the heart of Mexico.

Our recommendation on where to stay here is the Nima Local House Hotel. Why? Well if you like exclusive there are only FOUR rooms for starters! The style is elegant, the staff are attentive (as you would expect for such a small hotel), and there are some excellent massage and pampering treatments on offer after a long day wandering and site-seeing. It’s also right on the doorstep of the Roma and Condesa districts – two of Mexico City’s most cool and trendy places, full of relaxing cafes and boutique shops.

Our highlight of any trip to this incredible place is the Lucha Libre, Mexican Wrestling. The theatrical Lucha Libre is such a worldwide phenomenon these days, popping up everywhere from films, TV shows and cartoons to online slot games featuring colourfully-masked protagonists. And this great sport is best enjoyed at the Arena Mexico where the crowd and the wrestlers enjoy a fantastic spectacle!

3. JW Marriott, Cancun

Our next recommendation for luxury travellers in Mexico is the stunning and popular area of Cancun. This is place is famous for its all-inclusive holiday resorts. Cancun offers a paradise of Caribbean white-sand beaches, ideal for snorkelling, fishing and just plain chilling.

Whilst budget holidays are possible in Cancun, we recommend you go all out and take in the luxury of the JW Marriott, famous not just for its hospitality and comfort, but also for its stunning cuisine. This hotel is also right on the beach and features an infinity pool, and a Mayan-themed spa with saunas, steam rooms, and hot and cold pools.

You might want to spend your time relaxing by the pool or on the beach, but if you do get the urge to do something more energetic, one of the highlights of Cancun is the underwater museum of the Museo Subacuatico de Arte, featuring life-size sculptures in shallow waters ideal for first-time divers!

4. Papaya Playa Project, Tulum, Riviera Maya

If you think Cancun and Baja California sound nice, check out the beautiful Riviera Maya on the North Eastern Yucatan Peninsula where many long Caribbean beaches stretch out from the surrounding jungle.

Here you’ll find the Papaya Playa Project, a spiritual retreat featuring thatched cabanas. This is a stunning hotel resort with ocean view rooms, water sports, yoga, detoxes, therapies and alternative treatments.

The highlight of any stay in this area is the scuba diving that takes in the wrecks of Xcaret and the Puerto Morelos reef.

5. L’Otel, San Miguel de Allende

Away from the beaches on the two stunning coastlines of Mexico some of the highlights of Mexico include historic towns like San Miguel de Allende. This colonial town deep in Mexico’s central highlands is famous for baroque Spanish architecture and rich cultural history.

Here you will find the fabulous, simply-named L’Otel.

L’Otel feels more like a Guest House than a hotel, nestled as it is in a little side street, making it feel cosy and intimate. This place is pure luxury, with its roof terrace boasting incredible views over the city, including the famous Gothic Church with its pink towers rising above the El Jardin plaza.

Check in here and you’ll be treated to gorgeous rooms with private balconies and cute fireplaces. It’s the perfect place to relax after sightseeing in the town and the surrounding area.

Remember, if you choose to visit San Miguel de Allende then the highlight of your stay should be taking a walk around the old town, a World Heritage site, famed for its beauty and packed with churches whose bells always appear to be ringing out. It’s a tourist hot spot and unmissable for anyone travelling through this beautiful part of Mexico.
